When an opportunity comes knocking, you open the door — but what if you have to go looking for one instead?

If there were a perfect formula for creating business opportunities, its maker would be making a lot of money right now.

But ultimately, it all comes down to knowing your business’ strengths and weaknesses and understanding what it is you want to achieve.

Our Sales and Marketing Director, Barry Tuffs, is often asked what makes a good salesperson. His underlying guiding principles build a strong foundation for business revenue, supported by a great team of people at Invosys who are constantly striving for improvement. Whilst he doesn’t have the perfect formula, with almost 16 years of experience, we reckon he knows his stuff!

So, we compiled Barry’s top 10 tips for telco resellers looking to enhance their business opportunities…

  1. The right attitude

It might seem obvious, but your attitude goes a long way. It’s typically the first thing people will notice about you: your time management, work ethic, body language, energy, effort, passion and preparation. How can they believe in your services if they don’t believe in your attitude?

  1. A willingness to learn

Trial and error is the strongest path to success. To know how to do things, you need to learn what not to do — be open to asking for and receiving feedback, and look inward to see how you can move forward to invest in your growth. Realising that feedback is an opportunity rather than a personal criticism will strengthen your connections and open you up to further opportunities.

  1. An adaptable approach

Working in a fast-paced industry means you must stay one step ahead, adapting to changes whilst maintaining quick service and up-to-date knowledge of your market.

  1. Find your niche

What sets your business apart? What can you offer that can’t be found anywhere else? When you find that gap in the market, make it your own — driving forward with what makes you unique will spark interest in potential business.

  1. Get talking

Be visible online and engage in conversations around your specialist area. Through forums, LinkedIn and Twitter, participate in discussions that showcase your skills to people that might want or recommend your services.

  1. Maintain your relationships

You may be looking for new opportunities, but taking care of your existing customers and connections should remain a top priority. Building a loyal customer base means potential businesses can see the time and effort you put into them. Actions speak louder than words, so value your existing relationships and show you care.

  1. Take a break from the office

When everything can be done online, it’s easy to stay glued to your computer screen. Remember to get out there now and then — face-to-face communication, attending events and networking in real life make a huge difference when establishing business opportunities.

  1. Think like the competition

Business is rarely straightforward — sometimes, you need to reflect on what you offer and what sets you apart from your competitors. Knowing your strengths makes overcoming obstacles easier; believe in what you offer and know that your customers will, too.

  1. Keep in touch

You know that saying, ‘out of sight, out of mind’? Build a strong direct-to-consumer email list to increase advertising at a minimal cost. If your content can grab their attention, they should see it as often as possible. Persistence is key, people!

  1. People skills

Enhancing your business opportunities comes down to connection. Can you work closely with customers on a personal level, with an unwavering commitment to helping them see and achieve what they didn’t think was possible? Can you ask incisive questions with the ability to infer your advice? Ultimately, people buy from people — building solid connections with customers and clients ensures their trust in you and your services.
